Kaiteriteri, Ruby Bay, and Tahanui Beach
Against predictions, this Friday turned out to be quite sunny and warm. So I went on a veritable “Blueschtfährtli” – a drive through the blossoming countryside. As I drove northward, the vineyards were replaced by apple orchards. Kaiteriteri, almost in Abel Tasman National Park, at the Tasman Sea, was my destination for the day. I strolled along its sandy beach barefoot, not quite brave enough to dare a complete dip in the turquoise water. The coastal walk in the ocean air was truly refreshing. There were signs alerting the beach goers of nesting Blue Penguins in the area. I didn’t see any. The better for the birds, I guess.
The scenic route back to Nelson lead me into Ruby Bay, which presented another opportunity for a walk on a sandy beach.
“Wenns zweierlet, denn dreierlets” is something my mother-in-law used to say (roughly meaning ‘if something happens in twos, it happens in threes’). And sure enough, the Tahanui Beach in Nelson beckoned. Of the three beaches, this was the one that was most populated, an ideal situation for people-watching and brief leisurely chats!
A Day of Rest
On the next day rain kept me indoors for most of the day. Although complaining, I’m glad I haven’t been more in the south of the South Island. Dunedin, for example, has received three months’ worth of water within 24 hours. Everything is flooded.
