On the Coastal Walkway and the Surf Highway
Just to be clear: there weren’t ANY surfers on the beaches where I stopped today. The blustery wind and low temperatures were too challenging even for the otherwise hot-blooded bare-footers and bare-leggers. Apart from a pair of seagulls, the lighthouse at Cape Egmont braved the stiff wind solitarily. Mount Taranaki – like yesterday – was mostly shrouded in mist and clouds. The keen observer amongst you blog readers will spot it in a where-is-Waldo kind of fashion in some of the pictures.
There was one highlight on my morning stroll on the Coastal Walkway: the Rewa Rewa Bridge. It is a pedestrian and cycle bridge, spanning the Waiwhakaiho River, and is notable for its unique, sculptural design, which was inspired by the shape of a whale or a fish skeleton, symbolizing the connection between land and sea. And indeed, both pedestrians and cyclists made use of this work of art so early in the Friday morning hours.
Latest accomplishment: I figured out how to use my makeshift in-car navigation contraption also as a dashboard camera! Ah, the little things that make me happy!
