Day 65 – Thursday, October 24

Back to the North Island – to Hawke’s Bay

Today, the Interislander ferry sailed me back to the North Island. From Wellington I followed a north-easterly trajectory towards Hawke’s Bay, via Otaki, Palmerston North, Dannevirke to Hastings, across the Tararua Range with its gigantic wind farm and into the plain between the Ruahine and Puketoi ranges. The wind turbines had a lot to harvest since there was a strong northwester all the way from Wellington to here. However, the wind diminished considerably once I reached the plain, which was also the reason why the 27ºC my car thermometer indicated felt like summer. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected to be wearing my summer garb once more on this journey. Crop pants, T-shirt and sandals were warm enough attire at sundown. Maybe, tomorrow morning, it will be warm enough for a short swim in the sea? We’ll see.
