Day 58 – Thursday, October 17

Christchurch Cathedral

I was in need of a rest from the travelling. So I only went on a short stroll to the city’s old core and history, which included Cathedral Square and the Christchurch Cathedral, or rather its reconstruction site.

The building was severely damaged in the devastating earthquakes that struck the city and region in September 2010 and February 2011. The reconstruction of cathedral is still ongoing but has faced some financial and technical challenges. Therefore, the New Zealand government is presently halting further funding, leaving a sizeable funding gap. Because of these funding issues, the project leaders have had to reduce some parts of the cathedral’s reconstruction (for example, how much earthquake protection can and should be added). They are now focusing on the most important repairs and using simpler methods for the building’s foundation work.

A long walk in Hagley Park rounded off my historical adventures.
