I was on the road again, further north along the east coast of the South Island to Kaikoura. As on my way to Christchurch a few days ago, I opted for the less busy and more scenic inland route: Road 70 to Kaikoura via the Mount Lyford alpine route.
It started with long stretches through the Canterbury Plains. Vast, green fields, mountain range fringed on both sides – St James & Spenser Mountains ranges and Cheviot Hills – until the road got more hilly, more alpine, more cloudy. My destination was on the coast once more. Unfortunately, low-laying clouds covered up most of the mountain view at the peninsula lookout. It was a fitting end to my driving day nonetheless.
